1.

The Challenge

Seddons Plant & Engineering, a leading distributor of plant machinery and equipment, needed a modern data platform to unify their growing volumes of operational and sales data. Their existing systems made it difficult to gain real-time insights across multiple business dimensions like sales channels, reps, territories, cost centres, and management types.

Data was spread across different sources and required significant manual effort to produce consistent reporting. As the business expanded, it became critical to improve data governance, accelerate decision-making, and enable more detailed slicing of performance data — such as week-on-week, month-on-month, year-on-year, by sales rep, manager, or order type.

2.

Getting the Right Advice

After reviewing Seddons’ challenges, The Data Crew proposed the adoption of Microsoft Fabric — the new unified data and analytics platform from Microsoft.

Microsoft Fabric offered a perfect fit: a fully integrated solution combining data ingestion, storage, transformation, and visualisation in a single, governed environment. Fabric’s OneLake unified storage, Lakehouse architecture, and Real-Time Analytics capabilities provided the scalability and simplicity Seddons needed to future-proof their reporting and analytics capabilities.

3.

Building the Fabric Data Platform

We architected and implemented a full Microsoft Fabric environment structured around two key workspaces:

  • Lakehouse – Seddon Plant & Engineers (Data Ingestion, Processing, Storage)
  • Reports & Analytics – Seddon Plant & Engineers (Semantic Modelling, Reporting, Dashboards)

Using a medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold layers):

  • Bronze: Ingested raw data from Seddons’ GOLIVEDATA operational systems into the lakehouse.
  • Silver: Transformed and cleansed the raw data into optimised, business-ready tables.
  • Gold: Created highly curated datasets feeding into the Semantic Model for business reporting.

ETL processes were orchestrated through Fabric Pipelines and Notebooks, leveraging Spark and SQL transformations.

We then built a centralised Semantic Model to abstract data complexity and deliver a consistent, unified view for all users, supporting slicing by rep, territory, management type, order channel, and more.

4.

Empowering the In-House Team<

Beyond implementation, we ensured Seddons’ internal teams were equipped for long-term success:

  • Security and Governance: Structured user access policies based on least-privilege principles, integrated with Azure AD and Private Networking where needed.
  • Training and Handover: Delivered workshops and handover documentation to enable Seddons’ teams to extend and manage the platform independently.
  • Performance Optimisation: Helped tune OneLake storage and Delta table structures to maximise reporting speed and cost efficiency.

We built not just a data platform — but an environment Seddons can own, adapt, and expand as their needs grow.

5.

The Outcome

The new Microsoft Fabric data platform for Seddons Plant & Engineering has:

  • Centralised data from multiple sources into a single trusted platform.
  • Enabled real-time reporting and advanced analytics across key business metrics.
  • Improved data governance, access control, and security auditing.
  • Reduced manual data preparation effort, accelerating decision-making.
  • Empowered teams with powerful Power BI dashboards natively connected to Fabric.

Seddons can now quickly slice their performance data across multiple dimensions — delivering faster, more accurate insights that drive smarter business decisions.
