Victrex

A global manufacturer of high-performance PEEK polymers, moving its Dynamics 365 reporting from a costly, hand-built Synapse estate onto a governed Microsoft Fabric platform.

The challenge

Where they started

Victrex had invested heavily in an Azure data platform bringing Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations and Customer Engagement data through Synapse Analytics into Power BI. Over time it had accumulated hundreds of hardcoded pipelines, dataflows and datasets, full-table reloads whose run times grew with data volume, and a Data Vault that had drifted from its own design principles. Costs were hard to predict, key services were publicly reachable, access was granted to individuals rather than groups, and neither Synapse nor Power BI had version control or automated promotion between environments. With Synapse heading towards end of life, the business needed a clear, lower-risk route to a modern platform.

What we did

The platform we built

We started with a full architecture, cost and process review of the existing estate, setting out a prioritised plan covering security, cost control, incremental loading, metadata-driven pipelines and a medallion-based Data Vault 2.0 design. From there we designed new development, test and production landing zones with dedicated subscriptions, segmented virtual networks, private endpoints behind Azure Firewall, and a consistent naming and tagging model. Dataverse is now linked straight into Microsoft Fabric through Fabric Link, with legacy AX 2012 history brought into a Fabric Lakehouse alongside it. On the reporting side we built a dynamic row-level security model driven by Microsoft Entra group membership through the Graph API, later moved to Direct Lake so security changes apply without a dataset refresh, and automated dataset refreshes from Azure Data Factory using managed identity. Git-based development standards, branching, pull-request review and environment promotion were put in place for the Power BI and Fabric team.
